Throughline
When confronted with the confounding tendency for humans to treat each other badly, to stay sane, hold steady to what is good, true, simple and kind. Love wins. Sometimes it takes a long time. Hope. The dark is always followed by the dawn.
This treatment of the classic Christmas carol, Silent Night, was inspired by the ubiquitous troubles of 2023. David arranged and played the music, with Ben contributing violin parts and Patrice, vocals.
Paper art was made by Patrice. Ben did all the graphic enhancements and video editing. Because it's 2023, AI did make an appearance, but we promise, the humans were still in charge.
We offer this composition as both an acknowledgement of suffering and a promise of hope. Life is persistent. Like the woman in this video, we hope for you a steady gaze and a calm heart along whatever path you encounter.
David & Ben Lange, Patrice O'Neill

In the winter of 2021 this song is an invitation to move past the question, "When will this be over?' and instead treasure every tiny moment of grace and peace we find tucked into our lives. This is a David Lange arrangement of a shortened version of a song written by Patrice O'Neill. It is about just such a tiny moment of gratitude. Stop animation and editing by Ben Lange. Linda Waterfall's "The Hand of the Maker"
Переглядів 6603 роки тому
Linda Waterfall had a huge impact on singer-songwriters of the Seattle area and beyond. She was alway stretching musical boundaries as is evident in the 11/4 meter that much of this song is in. This song “The Hand of the Maker” was the last song she wrote and recorded. The intent was always to sing it again sometime, because she was weak and not in good voice at the time. I've done a certain am...
But Beautiful/It Could Happen to You (As Counterpoint Songs)

What a gift to have a couple great singers in the family. Several years ago I had a notion that two of my favorite Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke songs might work as counterpoint songs. With our new found time I was able to get Patrice and Benjamin to sing ‘But Beautiful’ and ‘It Could Happen To You’ at the same time. Special thanks to Clipper Anderson for the bass overdub.

    David, it was so nice listen to the beautiful music you guys played yesterday at the Edmonds Jazz Walk! And, above all, talk to you in person! On our way we back started speculating on how to play jazz chords on stradella, this video showed up first! :) Boy, it's complicated! Thank you for the wonderful music!

    There's so much to learn from this video! I'm actually doing multiple experiments and the biggest issue I'm facing is bleed and phase issues between microphones. What worked best for me in terms of phase is having two pencil microphones in XY for the right hand and a gooseneck cardioid for the left hand, although the one I own is a cheap one and has a very high self noise, so my best attempt sound-wise is XY coupled to a large condenser, with an acoustic panel made of rock wool perpendicular to the accordion which helps remove some phase issues. I will be looking for the ATM for sure, your left hand sounds incredible!

    This is simply a marvellous tutorial, especially compared to so many others. Sometimes understanding just a single important detail will allow you to play the full piece with better knowledge and greater ease. A very good job there David. You're certainly not the typical accordionist one meets every day. I personally have been playing the instrument (on and off) for the past 55 years! (God, that much already! I'm only sixty-five). It was a pleasure watching this video. Greetings from France.

    David: Note that many 60 and 80-bass stradella accordions voice the 7th chords differently from the more common 72, 96, and 120 bass models - where (as you explain) 72/96/120 bass models voice 7th chords with the 1st/3rd/7th notes of the chord, these 60/80 bass models voice these chords with the 3rd/5th/7th notes. This messes up a lot of jazz chord combining on these models, but allows players to get diminished chords without having a dedicated diminished row - that's because the 7th chord voiced this way works as a diminished chord for the row that's a 5th above. (i.e. the E/G/Bb notes of the C7 chord makes a G-dim chord, etc).

      That’s . I am a pretty miserable accordion scholar, so it’s always great to get get information from somebody who knows more than I do. I wish there was an easy way to update some of these videos to include information I received after the fact. For the most part, I don’t think I’ve done too much damage. I’ve often wished there was a chord button for a simple augmented chord. I believe there are some accordion‘s that have an extra chord row for this. Is this something you know about as well? Thanks again for your input. David

    • @AlanZisman
      @AlanZisman Рік тому

      @@deedpartle I've seen 140 bass accordions with an extra row of buttons, but the ones I've seen had minor 3rd buttons above the major 3rd counter-bass row. That would allow for easier Aug chords I guess, with - for instance the Ab minor 3rd on the F row combined with the C7 chord.

      @@AlanZisman, this was very helpful as I was struggling to get some of the sounds, I found out that my 80 bass uses the different configuration. Unfortunately I’m struggling a lot with that because, as a piano player, I’m really trying to get those extended colors in the chords. Do you have any suggestions or similar charts where I can cover the possibilities while still using my 80bass accordion?
